Animal Welfare

Humane and responsible treatment of our sheep is close to our hearts and company values.

Sheep are very vulnerable animals. As their stewards, we need to protect them while they provide for us.

Our farms in Maine are certified organic, make use of rotation grazing, provide effective fencing to prevent predators, and barns and sheds for overnight care.

Our shepherd is in contact with them always to be sure they are not getting into trouble.

On THE RANCH

Our rancher partners use open range, shepherds, guard dogs, and sheep dogs for their care.

Predators such as wolves, coyotes, and lions can take down 100 sheep at a time in a kill and so the shepherds are on constant watch night and day. They use rifles to protect their sheep. They also work with local environmental groups to work on humane predator practices.

OUR Sheep Standards

  • We are selective in our breed choice and breeding for fine wool sheep that will succeed in nature.
  • Our sheep range, breed, and lamb naturally and graze on pasture. We closely monitor their health.
  • We protect, sort and move our flocks with trained animals. We use rotational grazing systems.
  • We use gentle combs, and humane handling systems when shearing and sorting.
  • We use removable chalks for marking sheep, and sisal fiber twines on our hay.
  • We maintain clean facilities with natural light and ventilation.
  • We utilize sheep as a resource management tool.
  • We invest in infrastructure to protect against predation.
